All high street retail pharmacies shops and stores will have to be European Union (EU) directive compliant with the new Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) law which comes into effect with a deadline of the 9th February 2019.
The new law means that all pharmacy shops and stores will need to verify and decommission all medicines dispensed at the point of sale (PoS) to ensure that they are not counterfeit before they are dispensed !
Pharmacy manufacturers will now include a 2D Datamatrix (barcode) which uniquely identifies and will also include an anti-tamper device (ATD) on all medication packs before this deadline of the 9th February 2019.
Each individual pack of a prescription medicine will need to carry a unique identifier (UI) encoded via a 2D data matrix (barcode). If the pack size permits it, the pack will also carry the same information in human-readable text, printed adjacent to the 2D-code where possible.

The unique identifier will consist of:
• Product code: the name, common name, pharmaceutical form, strength, pack size and pack type
• Serial number: randomised numeric or alphanumeric sequence of up to 20 characters
• National reimbursement number: national identifying code, if required by Member State
• Batch number: up to 20 characters
• Expiry date: in YYMMDD form
Because this information will be printed and encoded on every pack, it can also be used for some activities in pharmacy, such as stock re-ordering, stock rotation and accuracy checking.
